Wabi-Sabi

In 2007, Wilczynski happened upon a little-known philosophy that redefined the course of her fine art work. Wabi-Sabi seeks to note that "in every moment “everything is either devolving towards or evolving from nothingness -- and nothingness, instead of being empty space, is alive with possibility, suggesting that the universe is in constant motion toward or away from infinite potential.”

"The record of sun, wind, rain, heat or cold in a language of discoloration, rust, tarnish, stain, warping, shrinking and cracking can create art by virtue of its inherent beauty. A rendering of a faint memory drawn from the mind of the weary traveler can speak of existential loneliness or tender sadness. Wabi-Sabi aims to visually express the truth that comes from the observation of nature."

History & Origin

Wabi-Sabi's metaphysical, spiritual and moral principles come from ideas about simplicity, naturalness and acceptance of reality found in taoism and Zen buddhism. The first recorded Wabi-Sabi tea master was Murata Shuko (1423-1502), a Zen monk from Nara who challenged secular society and the elite rituals that came to define the Tea Ceremony at the time.
